The Saguaro Cactus
The large cactus you see inside the patio and outside in the desert is called a saguaro cactus.  It grows nowhere else on earth except in the Sonoran Desert, which covers a large area of Arizona, California and Mexico.  The saguaro cactus distinguishes itself through its peculiar appearance, its immense size and its long life time. It is estimated that a saguaro cactus can reach between 150 to 200 years. During this time it can grow to a height of 40 to 60 feet (12 to 18 m), and can weigh between 3,200 and 4,800 pounds, depending on how saturated it is.  As it ages, it develops its arm=like branches that make it so unique in its appearance. Although it is not yet on the endangered species list,  Arizona nevertheless has strict regulations about the harvesting or destruction of the specie.
