New Orleans Courtyard

New Orleans, known as the birthplace or cradle of jazz, is an American city located on the Gulf of Mexico. It is the very least "American" city in the USA. The reason for this is its colorful history. Founded by the French, it was acquired by Spain, and eventually sold to the Americans. All three cultures left behind their special mark - consequently, you'll find Spanish architecture, French cuisine, and American plantation homes, all of which attract tourists from around the country. The highlight in New Orleans is, however, its musical history, which has its roots in yet another people who influenced New Orleans culture in a big way. It was the Afro-Americans whose musical talent gave rise to a new form of strictly American music - the Blues and Dixieland jazz. In this respect, my research into the history of N.O. and jazz also showed a heavy presence of German immigrants, who contributed to the creation of jazz with their "Blasmusik", which they brought with them from their and my home country.
I am depicting a New Orleans courtyard in my design above. In the old, that is, the original, town of New Orleans (now called the French Quarter), courtyards are a common feature. They were established by the Spanish, who rebuilt the original French city in their own image after a huge fire had extinguished most of the wooden French buildings. One of the abiding features of the New Orleans courtyard is the extremely lush vegetation,  the large fountain and the street lamps, which I tried to re-create here. The closeness to the Gulf of Mexico and the hot climate make for sub-tropical conditions, which affect the growth of plant life in a positive way. Should you ever visit New Orleans, be sure to lunch in one of the old-town court-yards. I know you will enjoy it as much as I have.

I want to thank one and all for all your hearts and comments, which are so very encouraging and appreciated!

'Thank you creativediva. My memories are very, very close to my heart, not suitable to be written about on a public channel. Now  if you were my friend next door, with whom I can chat face to face, it would be a different matter.  Suffice it to say, it was the best of times (and sometimes the worst of times, as the saying goes) I spent there with a person I love more than life itself. The pain of this time being gone forever would make it near unbearable for me to go back.

Absolutely great design. You captured the "romantic side" of New Orleans. Now i am intrigued as you have mentioned that you had bittersweet memories at this place. Not gonna ask any questions though. But I do love this design, its gorgeous :)

And I know what you mean about here. In fact, I've met tourists from Europe that say it is more European than their town. It's one of the reasons I've never been able to stay away for long, I'm always meeting  and getting to know people from other cultures :-)
