This is the living room to my Southern home series. I have done the porch, the bed room, the entrance hall and the dining room. In all five rooms I have tried to create the feel of an old Southern mansion as it may have been before the Civil War, with the exception of modern conveniences such as electric lights, for example. The historic homes I have toured in the South mostly were not furnished in the Louis XV but in an American style called the Federal Style, which generally was more austere than the frivolous French Louis XV style. Favorite woods were mahogany or cheaper woods with veneers from mahogany. When I make use of pieces from other styles or cultures, such as the Louis XVI chairs above, I try to choose the most compatible ones, so that I can still convey the atmosphere of the old Southern house.
