NY Eve on the Mountain

It is New Year's Eve, and three skiers got lost in the mountains at nightfall. They were lucky to find this open hut, which is the summer abode of farm laborers who spend the season tending the cow herds high up in the mountains. Fortunately, our three friends found enough cushions for the bed grates, as well as a few can's of beer, but had only enough food left from their day's supply.

The design is based on a real life event that happened to my brother, as he was leading a group of friends on a mountain hike and couldn't find his way back  by the time night fell.  Finding what looked like a deserted cabin,  and desperate for shelter from the cold, they broke a window  and climbed in, only to find a half eaten meal at the table. It didn't take long before the owners, two hunters, returned and confronted the intruders at the point of a gun while listening to their explanation. Fortunately, the owners knew the mountain well enough to cart the whole group down in their jeep that very evening.

Actually, and maybe I should add that, the story and design was inspired by an event which happened to my brother, an avid mountain hiker and skier, who led a group of friends hiking in the mountains, but  failed to find the correct path back before nightfall. They had to seek shelter from the cold,  and in sheer desperation broke into a cabin .  The story continues but fortunately, after a brief encounter with the returning owners who held them hostage at gunpoint until they convinced them that they were not burglars,  it ended happily.

Thank you Russ! The idea is based on an event that happened to my brother, an avid skier and mountain hiker, who got lost with a group of friends he was leading on a hike, when nightfall set in while still high up on the mountain, and they had to break into a cabin to stay warm.
