Old German Manor

Dedicated to my grandfather, who had to flee East Prussia in World War II.

The mansion and the castle differ less by their inhabitants than by their function. The manor is always the center of the estate as the manor, winery or nobility, so to speak, a historic farm, a Gutsherrschaft. The squire - who could have come from the nobility, but did not have to - was not only landowner and employer, but could also speak lawfully on his estate. The differences between mansion and castle therefore lie in the functional area: The small estate of a nobility gentleman has only one mansion, the manor house of a noble landlord can also be called a castle. If a noble castle serves merely representative purposes and is not part of a manorial estate, it is not a mansion. If the manor of the nobility gentleman is particularly large and equally artistic, it is usually colloquially referred to as a castle.

Continuation from below: Also have a number of great books on the bombing of a thousand German cities and the resistance movement during WWII.  If you are interested, I'll look up the titles of movies and books.

Oh BTW, about 14/15 years ago when I moved back home and was looking for a house/apartment to buy, I found countless East German estates literally selling for "peanuts" in the Thueringen and other East German areas. Unfortunately, I didn't have a partner who was skilled enough to restore them. Too bad, all were former mansions in the Eastern part of Germany.

Well, back from my shopping trip - Mum,  I LOVE your story that goes with your design.

Since YouTube has been available, I have watched a lot of shows about that part of German history (ueber die Heimatvertriebenen), which many people know nothing about. Very little is reported about the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff with over 10,000 East German refugees on board, which is called the greatest maritime disaster in history. I also have found  a couple great movies on YouTube, one about the bombing of Dresden, the other about the last days of Berlin, when the Russians moved in.
